Cutting down post-harvest losses

Countries in Sub-Saharan Africa, including Kenya, face a significant problem known as ‚post-harvest loss.‘ Depending on the specific crop and location, these losses can be as high as 50%. This means that a substantial portion of the food produced in Africa goes to waste every day, year after year, before it can reach those who need it. You can imagine the consequences.

The reasons behind this issue are quite complex.

GlobalSouth is reducing this food loss and while we’re doing so, we’re putting more money into farmer’s pockets. We’re not only addressing the problem of food loss but also helping farmers tackle a variety of other daily challenges they encounter.

Making farming effective and efficient

1.

Cooperation with smallholder farmers

GlobalSouth forges strong partnerships with smallholder farmers around each location. We help these farmers set up cooperatives, which empower them to enhance their farming techniques and productivity.

When it’s time to plant, we supply them with high-quality seeds, essential fertilizers, and crop protection during the growth phase. We also share vital agricultural knowledge in close collaboration with the farmers.

2.

Sales & Marketing for smallholder farmers

After successfully boosting yields, and once the farmers have completed their harvest, GlobalSouth offers access to cold storage facilities. These facilities allow the crops to be stored for an extended period, waiting for a good market.

Through active marketing, we support our smallholders to secure the best prices in both domestic and global markets.

Finally, we organize the entire logistics from the farmers to the customers.

3.

Education of smallholder farmers

While we we continually expand the number of locations and increasing the number of connected farmers and their productivity, we are also continuously training those smallholders who are already connected to us.

We train our farmers to apply methods of regenerative agriculture and other good agricultural practices (GAP), such as crop rotation among many others.

Eventually, GlobalSouth provides training on using mechanization.

Philosophy

GlobalSouth’s DNA: SDGs and ESG Aligned

We firmly believe that ’sustainability‘ is an ever-relevant and essential concept, even though it might seem overused. However, it perfectly captures the core values at the heart of GlobalSouth.

At GlobalSouth, sustainability is not just an afterthought in our annual reports; it’s the driving force behind our entire business model, thoroughly aligned with the empowering vision of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the most stringent Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) standards.

At every stage of our value chains, we actively and indirectly contribute to the broad spectrum of the United Nations‘ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) given below.

We see this as a thrilling opportunity to make a positive impact and create a better future.

Who are WE?

We strongly believe Africa has immense potential to become a leading food exporter thanks to its agricultural resources. However many African countries import a significant amount of food due to several reasons – in which we see Global South´s chance to create impact.

Since 2023 we were able to achieve important milestones.

After experience in the corporate and tech start-up world, founder and CEO Thomas Behrens was committed to building something impactful. Together with a highly motivated and educated team in Kenia onsite he shapes the core mission of Global South.

This is just the beginning – continiously developing the main pillars of Global South´s vision: regenerative farming, seed production, cold storage and solar energy.

2023

We launch operations in Nakuru County, starting with our own farm and pilot tests with two farmer cooperatives. First harvests are completed in August, lead by our ten-person team onsite. Two long-term processor agreements are signed and initial revenues are generated.

2024

Customer demand volume doubles, which we see as proof-of-concept for our model’s scalability.

With our license obtained as a certified seed merchant we are now able to provide certified seeds to our farmers. At this point we are working with 97 farmers in total.

2025

In cooperation with the county government of Nyandarua we are able to expand our activities into a new region.

A new cold storage technology is being identified, that offers potential for improving the efficiency of post-harvest handling.

Our current efforts are focused on developing two Agri-Hubs and expanding seed production.

Upcoming

Signing an agreement with the Nyandarua county government: we get access to a first cold storage facility and start supporting potato farmers in the county.

Additionally we are getting ready to participate in a programme (more to come soon) which enables us to onboard additional farmer groups.
